The Mothman Prophecies The Movie (2002)

Plot summary for
The Mothman Prophecies (2002)

The main character, John Klein, a Washington Post journalist, and his wife Mary finally find the house of their dreams. On the way back from the new home, Mary sees a winged figure, jerks the wheel and skids into the sidewalk. She hits her head badly, and dies in the hospital a little later. After her death, John discovers her drawings of a dark, moth-like, winged creature.  John, completely devastated.  While driving to Richmond, Virginia, for a interview John finds himself on a back road in northern West Virginia - hundreds of miles away, with no recollection of how he got there.  Thus he begins to investigate the secrets behind this mystery. It takes him to a small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, where he discovers strange goings on, and the appearance of a dark winged creature, similar to what his wife drew. Here he meets Connie Mills, a local police woman, whilst he continues to unravel the mystery of what the Mothman really is. In this small town, local cop Connie struggles with many sightings of a mothlike creature taller than a man being reported, while John believes that an explanation for his wife's fate can be found. The deeper John digs, the clearer the mothman's purpose appears - only to leave his life in immediate danger, and ultimate confusion from his discussions with an unknown figure named Indrid Cold.

In the movie "The Mothman Prophecies", the character John Klein asked Indrid Cold:

"What do you look like?"

Indrid Cold (The Mothman?) replied:

"It depends on who is looking."

The same can be said for reality as a whole!  It depends on who is doing the looking!

As Isaac Asimov said:

"It's not what you see that is suspect, but how you interpret what you see"
